Created for a theatre production that fuses Chinese Opera with New Media, the virtual actors are inspired by shapes, colors and motions of traditional Chinese costumes and dance. The project made me think of how costumes and fashion could reshape a human body. Greece can best be described as the birthplace of stage performances. Even an amphitheater of 1,900 years is not the country's oldest such facility. And the long tradition of theater has at least trained Greek ears and eyes for stage plays, even though it is an outlandish one. Greek audience was duly entertained by a Chinese Kun Opera. And they heartily appreciated the performance by the Suzhou Kun Opera Theater which is in Greece for the 2017 China-Greece Cultural Exchanges and Culture Industry Cooperation Year. The Chinese have done their best to render their performance a dialogue between a centuries-old Chinese musical drama and an as old Greek theater. The lead actor, Yu Jiulin, has been feeling excited about his Greek tour of performance. "I've learned that the Herod Atticus Thea...
Chinese opera has a history dating some 2,000 years. There are 317 types of opera, of which Peking opera is the most important and well-known. The practitioner of Peking opera is a master athlete -- he must be in top physical shape to accommodate the rigors of this performance art. Most performers begin their training from childhood. A well-known example is Kungfu star Jacky Chan, who started training in Peking opera as a child. Performers wear extensive makeup; their whole faces are painted in bright colors. Colorful masks, inspired from ancient ceremonies and religious symbols, are done by the actors. The color of each character's face is significant as it represents the character's personality and fate. www.GalleriaPangea.com
Nixon in China Music by JOHN ADAMS and Libretto by ALICE GOODMAN COMPANY PREMIERE John Adams' rhythmically rich re-creation of a presidential trip to Beijing has established itself as a great American opera, a work of "clarity, simplicity, shocking elegance" that "will be around for the long haul" (The New York Times). A quarter-century after premiering at Houston Grand Opera under the leadership of David Gockley, this modern masterpiece makes its long-awaited Bay Area stage premiere. Michael Cavanagh's "brilliantly effective" staging (Vancouver Sun) will feature Brian Mulligan, whose rich baritone thrilled audiences in San Francisco Opera's Faust (2010) and Werther (2010), in the title role. Lawrence Renes, whose conducting of Adams' Doctor Atomic won praise from London critics, will le...
